RootKeep (“the app”) lets you build a family tree on your phone. It has no user accounts and no server of its own. This policy explains what stays on your device and the little that leaves it.
In short
- Your family data, including information about living relatives, stays only on your device. We cannot see it and never receive it.
- The app does not collect usage statistics or crash reports and contains no analytics or advertising SDK.
- If you buy Pro, Google Play handles the payment and RevenueCat checks the purchase.
- No advertising, no advertising ID, no selling or sharing of data.

Data stored on your device
People, names, events, dates, places, families, notes, sources and any other content of the GEDCOM files you open are saved in a database in the app's private storage. Photos you add are copied into the app's private storage after being resized on the device; their location and camera data (EXIF/GPS) are removed. Backups (GEDZIP files) are kept in the app's private storage. Settings such as the app lock are saved there too.
The app opts out of Android's cloud backup, so this data is not copied to your Google account by the app. Android's direct phone-to-phone transfer, if you use it when you set up a new phone, can still move it.
Data leaves your device only when you share it: for example when you export a GEDCOM or GEDZIP file, or share a PDF chart or report through the system share menu. Where it goes then is your choice, and the receiving app's or service's privacy policy applies. Exports can contain information about living people; use “Hide living people” in the print options where you want to leave it out. If you write to support from the app, the e-mail is prepared with the app version, Android version, language and a range of the number of people in your tree (for example “150–999”); no names, files or photos are added unless you attach them yourself.

The app does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, media or storage permissions. Photos are chosen with the system photo picker and files with the system file picker, which give the app only the items you pick.
Purchases (Google Play and RevenueCat)
Pro is sold as a monthly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase, processed by Google Play; we never see your payment card or Google account details. The app uses RevenueCat, Inc. to verify the purchase and restore it on a new phone. RevenueCat receives a random app user identifier, the purchase token and product, price, currency and country/store, and basic device information (such as operating system and app version), and keeps purchase records as needed to provide the service and for accounting. Your family tree is never part of this. See the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
Legal bases (EEA/UK)
Purchase verification: performance of the contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Your family tree is processed only on your device, under your control. RevenueCat and Google may process data in the United States; they rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses.
Deleting your data
- Delete people, photos and backups in the app.
- Uninstalling the app, or Android Settings → Apps → RootKeep → Storage → Clear data, deletes everything the app stored, including photos and backups. Files you exported or shared stay where you put them.
- There is no account to delete. For purchase records held by RevenueCat, see Delete your data.
Children
The app is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR, KVKK, LGPD or US state privacy laws) you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Because we do not hold your family data and have no accounts, most of these rights are exercised directly in the app. For anything else write to support@plainwharf.com.
Changes
We will update this page when the app's data handling changes and show the new date above. If a future version sends any data from your device (for example optional usage statistics), it will be described here before that version is released and, where required, will ask for your consent first.
